From ISPO to Outdoor
The dates as to when trade shows will be held are decided by the large sportswear manufacturers. The canoe industry although it plays no part in these decisions still tries to be a part of it all.

The Ispo was for many years the most important trade show for the canoeing industry. The date was continually brought forward from the September to early August.
There was a lot of unrest because August is also the time for summer sales, rafting and canoe rental.
The outdoor sector had similar problems and needed a trade show that would suit them.

In 1994 the Outdoor was born and the canoe industry not only took part but also enjoyed the success of this trade show.

Over the years the date for the Outdoor has steadily come forward and is now well established in July.

Ambience, service and professionalism at the highest level. An excellent atmosphere at the first Outdoor to be held in the new exhibition centre.

The consequences for the canoe industry were catastrophic. Both exhibitors and visitors found the dates of the exhibition impossible to work with. The result was that important exhibitors stayed away and with them the visitors, who, if they came were not interested in buying.
Canoe trade show in July equates to less exhibitors and less visitors.

Rock bottom
We reached rock bottom in October 2003 where there were more canoe traders and manufacturers in pup amenity rooms to be found doing business than at the trade shows.

Space was at a premium at the Post Hotel in Rohrdorf.

The Outdoor offers ambience, service and professionalism at the highest level.
In addition to that the synergy effects of the different sectors of the outdoor industry are extremely valuable.

Nevertheless a make shift trade show in autumn worked better than the perfect show in summer.

Communications problem
The Outdoor Trade Show tried to win back the exhibitors. There was an offer of more space and an extended fringe programme, however, without success. The poor communication contributed to the problem because the reallocation of the canoe sector to a better area within the exhibition was interpreted as an attempt to push the canoeists into the corner. The good intentions of the exhibition never really came across.

Out of the shambles arose something new
The state of affairs in Feb. 2004 was that the central market place for the canoeing industry had ceased to exist and that Europe’s canoe industry was homeless.
It couldn’t get any worse so it was decided that we needed to help ourselves out of this shambles and build and organise something new for the canoe industry by the canoe industry.

Exhibition
The location Rohrdorf is well known to the visitor already from the 2003 show. This year instead of the amenity rooms at the Post Hotel we have managed to secure the modern sport centre. The interest was immense and the 1200 m2 floor space was sold out within days. The exhibitors who missed out on space have been given a small stand in the foyer or balcony so that they can at least be in attendance.

Off to a good start with a long term future
The "Kanumesse" in its first year looks as though it could become the most important canoe trade show in Europe. About 50 exhibitors will be there or near at hand while visitors from Germany, Europe and abroad have signalled their attendance.

Kanumesse 2005 is from 15.-18. September
In future we will have to rethink where the "Kanumesse" will be held in order to accommodate more exhibitors and visitors. The possibilities are many, however, it might be prudent to await the feedback from the exhibitors and the visitors. In a nutshell it is what they want that matters that counts.
